A bidirectional microphone, also known as a figure‑eight mic, captures audio waves travelling from the front and the back of the device while largely ignoring those arriving from the sides. Its distinctive polar pattern—shaped like an “8” when plotted on a graph—arises from the constructive and destructive interference of the sound pressure traveling toward the diaphragm. In practice this means that two distinct acoustic zones exist: one at the microphone’s forward facing side and one at its rearward side. Sound that arrives from either direction is recorded with similar sensitivity, whereas lateral sounds are markedly attenuated.

When placing a vocalist in front of the mic and a guitarist directly behind, the resulting mix naturally separates their contributions while preserving a cohesive center. Because the side rejection is pronounced, background hiss, room echoes, and bleed from adjacent instruments drop dramatically, giving engineers cleaner headroom for creative processing. Modern high‑end models now integrate digital signal processing to tame the slight ringing characteristic of ribbons, extending the application of the figure‑eight pattern into pop production, podcasting, and live streaming.
