In its simplest form, a CV channel carries a continuous electrical signal whose magnitude can be varied from 0 V up to several volts. That tiny, silent ripple can dictate the pitch of an oscillator, pull the cutoff of a resonant low‑pass filter, shape the attack and release of an envelope generator, or drive a subtle modulation wheel—all with a single cable and a handful of potentiometers or patch points. Producers also embrace CV for dynamic automation—using voltage signals to sculpt evolving filter ramps or rhythmic tremolos in live performances where an on‑stage keyboard is replaced by a joystick or sensor array.

Beyond pure sound creation, control voltage embodies a philosophy of immediacy and physicality. When a guitarist bends a string, their fingers alter tension directly; in a modular setup, a single patch cord translates finger pressure into a moving target voltage, offering comparable tactile feedback but on a scale that can span the entire spectrum of a synthesizer.
