Akon is a Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur known for his distinctive vocal style and major influence on late 2000s hip-hop and R&B. Born Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1973 and raised partly in Senegal, he developed a musical identity shaped by both West African rhythms and American urban music.
