A visionary figure whose influence has stretched across live music, artist development, touring, festivals, and digital media, Marc Geiger has played a defining role in shaping the modern music industry. Known for his forward-thinking approach and ability to anticipate major shifts in music culture and technology, Geiger has spent decades building platforms, festivals, and artist-focused ventures that helped redefine how audiences connect with music.

Born in Englewood and raised in Stamford before relocating to Palo Alto, Geiger grew up surrounded by both technical innovation and creative ambition. His father, a Holocaust survivor born in Budapest, worked as a satellite communication engineer in Silicon Valley, exposing Geiger early to an environment centered around invention and emerging technology. That combination of entrepreneurial thinking and cultural awareness would later become a defining characteristic of his career.

While attending the University of California, San Diego, Geiger immersed himself in music promotion and independent culture. He launched a co-operative record store called Assorted Vinyl, specializing in hard-to-find dance remixes and alternative releases, while simultaneously running the university’s Student Events Committee. His passion for live music quickly evolved into concert promotion, leading him to create his own company, That Kid Presents. Early bookings included legendary artists such as King Crimson, B.B. King, and Ian Hunter, establishing Geiger as an ambitious young promoter with a strong instinct for artist development and audience engagement.

Geiger later joined San Diego-based promoter Avalon Attractions, where he promoted hundreds of concerts and helped launch Humphrey’s By The Bay, a venue that became a staple of the Southern California live music scene. Around the same time, he also worked as a DJ at 91X, the influential alternative radio station credited with helping introduce countless listeners to emerging underground music.

After earning a degree in management science and biology, Geiger moved to Los Angeles and entered the agency world, eventually helping develop the alternative music division at Triad Artists. During this era, he worked with groundbreaking artists including Pixies, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, New Order, and Jane's Addiction. His work during the rise of alternative rock positioned him at the center of one of the most transformative periods in modern music history.

Geiger’s impact expanded dramatically when he co-created Lollapalooza alongside Perry Farrell and veteran agent Don Muller. What began as a farewell tour concept quickly evolved into one of the most influential music festivals ever created. Lollapalooza helped legitimize alternative music on a global scale while introducing a generation of fans to a broader spectrum of rock, hip-hop, industrial, electronic, and underground artists. The festival’s influence on music culture, touring, and festival economics continues to be felt decades later.

In the early 1990s, Geiger joined American Recordings as Executive Vice President of A&R, Marketing, and New Media, working closely with legendary producer Rick Rubin. During this period, Geiger became increasingly focused on the future of music on the internet, recognizing early that digital connectivity would fundamentally change the relationship between artists and fans.

That vision led to the creation of ARTISTdirect in 1997, one of the pioneering digital music platforms of the internet era. As co-founder, CEO, and Vice Chairman, Geiger helped establish ARTISTdirect as an innovative destination that combined artist content, music discovery, commerce, label services, and direct fan engagement long before such ideas became industry standards. The platform was widely viewed as ahead of its time, helping demonstrate how the internet could empower artists while building stronger relationships with audiences worldwide.

In 2003, Geiger joined WME , where he would eventually lead the agency’s global music division. Under his leadership, the music department grew into one of the most influential forces in live entertainment, representing major artists while helping expand the worldwide festival business into a massive international industry. His reputation for strategic thinking, artist advocacy, and large-scale vision made him one of the most respected executives in music.

Throughout his career, Geiger has worked with an extraordinary range of artists including David Byrne, Neil Diamond, LCD Soundsystem, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Petty, and many others, helping shape touring strategies and live-event growth during a period of major industry transformation.

In 2020, Geiger once again demonstrated his ability to respond to major changes in the industry by launching SAVELIVE, an initiative designed to help independent live music venues survive the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company secured significant investment capital and focused on building a sustainable independent touring network capable of supporting venues and artists alike during a period of enormous uncertainty. The venture later evolved into Gate 52, reflecting Geiger’s continued commitment to the future of live music and artist ecosystems.

Across multiple decades, Marc Geiger has consistently operated at the intersection of music, technology, culture, and entrepreneurship. From helping launch alternative rock into the mainstream through Lollapalooza, to pioneering direct artist-to-fan platforms with ARTISTdirect, to reshaping global touring and festival infrastructure, his influence has touched nearly every corner of the modern music business. His career reflects not only an understanding of where music has been, but an unusually accurate vision of where it was headed long before the rest of the industry caught up.
