Three 6 Mafia are an American hip-hop group widely regarded as pioneers of Southern rap and crunk music. Formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in the early 1990s, the group’s core members included Juicy J, DJ Paul, and Lord Infamous, along with several collaborators over the years.

Three 6 Mafia built their reputation in the underground scene with a dark, gritty sound that blended horrorcore themes, heavy bass, and hypnotic production. Their early work helped define the Memphis rap style, influencing countless artists in the South and beyond.

They achieved mainstream success with albums such as When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 and Most Known Unknown, the latter featuring hit singles like “Stay Fly.” Their music combined club-ready beats with their signature dark aesthetic.

A major milestone in their career came when they won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp” from the film Hustle & Flow, making them one of the first hip-hop groups to achieve this honor.

Their style is characterized by eerie melodies, rapid hi-hat patterns, deep basslines, and chant-like hooks, elements that have had a lasting influence on modern trap and hip-hop production.

Today, Three 6 Mafia are recognized as highly influential figures in hip-hop, credited with shaping the sound of Southern rap and inspiring generations of artists. Their legacy continues through their music and the widespread adoption of their production style across contemporary hip-hop.
