Gideon Drops New EP "44" Ahead of Australian Tour with Bury Tomorrow
The EP opens with the punchy “Wrong One” and moves through the title track, the relentless “Til The Wheels Fall Off,” the Southern‑flavored “YEEHAW,” and concludes with the introspective “Find It As I Go.” A visualiser dropped alongside “YEEHAW” showcases the band’s rugged aesthetic and nods to their Southern roots. In a release statement, Gideon expressed excitement: "We’re happy to finally present to you all, the ‘4×4’ EP in its entirety! Shout out to Randy Lebouef and Ryan Leitru for helping us bring the vision to life, and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!"
Gideon formed in 2008 and has issued six studio albums and two EPs to date. Their debut, Costs (2011) on Strike First Records, was followed by Milestone (2012), the first album to chart. Subsequent releases—Calloused, Cold, Out Of Control, and More Power. More Pain.—document a shift from melodic metalcore toward a heavier, thrash‑oriented sound. In 2019 the band publicly announced it no longer identified as a Christian act, a change that coincided with the EP No Love/No One and the album Out Of Control.
The current lineup—vocalist Daniel McWhorter, guitarist‑vocalist Tyler Riley, bassist Caleb DeRusha, and drummer Jake Smelley—worked with producers Randy Lebouef and Ryan Leitru on the new EP, according to the band’s statement.
Releasing a standalone EP between full‑length albums is a growing trend among established metalcore acts, allowing bands to maintain momentum, experiment with new material, and deliver fresh content more frequently in a streaming‑driven market. The title "4×4" hints at a rugged, hard‑driving aesthetic that aligns with Gideon’s recent creative direction, while the visualiser for "YEEHAW" reinforces the group’s willingness to incorporate Southern identity into its presentation.
For Australian audiences, the timing is significant. Gideon will return to the country in September as part of Bury Tomorrow’s Australian tour, performing the new songs live shortly after the EP’s launch. The tour schedule includes shows at The Tivoli (Brisbane), King St Bandroom (Newcastle), Metro Theatre (Sydney), Northcote Theatre (Melbourne), The Gov (Adelaide), and Magnet House (Perth). Australian metalcore band Headwreck will also appear as a special guest.
The EP is available on all major streaming platforms and can be purchased through Sumerian Records’ online store. While it is unclear whether "4×4" will serve as a standalone release or a bridge toward a future full‑length album, it provides a clear snapshot of Gideon’s current musical evolution.
In summary, Gideon’s "4×4" EP marks the band’s first new material since 2023, offers a concise showcase of their heavier sound, and sets the stage for a high‑profile Australian tour. The release underscores the band’s continued growth and adaptability within the competitive metalcore landscape.
