Baku Hosts First-Ever Azerbaijan Tango Festival, Celebrating Argentine Culture
The opening ceremony, set for 20:00 on 20 June, takes place beside Gosha Gala in Icherisheher’s ancient walls. The timing is deliberate: it coincides with Argentina’s Flag Day, a nod to the diplomatic and cultural ties that bind the two nations. The event will kick off with a concert featuring the world‑renowned Solo Tango Orchestra and a roster of distinguished performers, including Neri Piliu, Yanina Quiñones, Maxim Gerasimov, Ornella Simonetto, Utku Kuley, Iris Kuley, Jesús Gorgone and Victoria Lizunova.
The festival’s program blends live performances, milongas, masterclasses, international competitions, Argentine folklore, film screenings and open‑air concerts. Visitors can explore two dedicated zones: PRO ZONE, tailored for participants, and CITY ZONE, designed for guests. Both areas host workshops and exhibitions that deepen the tango experience.
A highlight of the opening night is the Solo Tango Orchestra’s set of classic and contemporary pieces. The ensemble has earned acclaim performing at venues such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Moscow International House of Music, the Grand Concert Hall of St. Petersburg and Admiralspalast Berlin.
The festival’s closing concert on 24 June pays tribute to the legendary Argentine singer and composer Carlos Gardel. La Argenta Ensamble will perform at the Baku Music Academy’s Opera Studio, followed by the Baku Tango Trophy and the Metropolitango Cup—two prestigious international tango competitions. Eldar Jafarov, head of the secretariat of the Azerbaijan Dance Council (AzDC) and a multiple world champion, said the competitions will benefit from Icherisheher’s unique atmosphere.
Tickets are available online through iTicket.Az. The festival’s official website and Instagram page provide schedules, artist bios and additional details.
El Calor en Baku is the product of a partnership between the Administration of the State Historical‑Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher”, the Embassy of Argentina in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan Dance Council and local and international tango communities. Media coverage is provided by Azernews.Az, Trend.Az, Day.Az and Milli.Az.
For Azerbaijan, the festival is more than a short‑term event. It aims to create a special atmosphere, promote cultural tourism, bring residents and visitors of the capital together, and reinforce Baku’s image as a modern, open cultural hub. The combination of competition, dance art and large‑scale celebration is expected to attract international attention to the city’s historic core.
By aligning the festival with Argentina’s Flag Day, the organizers underscore the enduring diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries. The event showcases the global reach of tango, a dance that originated in the Río de la Plata region and has become an international cultural heritage.
The festival’s schedule, artist lineup and competition details are available on the official website and the festival’s Instagram. The event is expected to draw visitors from Azerbaijan and abroad, offering a unique blend of music, dance and heritage within the historic streets of Icherisheher.
In short, El Calor en Baku marks the first time Baku will host an international tango festival. From 19 to 24 June, the city’s Old Town will host performances, competitions and cultural activities that celebrate Argentine tango and strengthen Azerbaijan’s cultural profile on the world stage.
