Lorde Calls Out Spotifys AI-Generated Song Descriptions as Inaccurate
Spotify’s “About the Song” feature debuted in February 2026 as a beta service that adds narrative cards to the Now Playing screen. The cards pull data from third‑party sources to give listeners context about a track’s meaning, inspiration and production, and are available to Premium users on mobile in selected English‑speaking markets.
The erroneous text read: “On her Ultrasound World Tour, Lorde turns Current Affairs into a full‑on performance piece, stripping down to underwear while a dancer pours water over her stomach so the song plays out like the shower scene she talks about on stage.” The description linked the track to a stage routine that the artist has never performed. In her Instagram post, Lorde wrote, “Hey Spotify, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say we don’t want this. Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI‑generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation IMO.” She added a request for an opt‑out option.
After the backlash, Spotify removed the synopsis for Current Affairs. A company spokesperson said the feature is still in beta, “presents cited information from third‑party sources,” and that the team is working to improve it based on feedback from artists and fans.
Lorde’s criticism of AI‑driven content is not new. At Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival on July 9, she addressed the crowd about the growing prevalence of AI‑powered wearable technology, saying, “Increasingly, in our world, it gets harder and harder to know what is real. Can I just say, for the record… Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.”
The singer is currently touring in support of her fourth studio album, Virgin, which was released in 2025. The Ultrasound World Tour began on September 17, 2025, in Austin, Texas, and will conclude on September 1, 2026, in Luxembourg. Lorde is scheduled to perform at the Colours of Ostrava festival in the Czech Republic on Saturday, July 18.
The incident underscores the tension between streaming platforms’ use of AI to enrich user experience and artists’ concerns about accurate representation of their work. While Spotify’s beta feature aims to deepen listener engagement, the misstep demonstrates the risks of relying on automated summaries without artist oversight.
As of now, the “About the Song” card for Current Affairs has been removed, and Lorde’s call for an opt‑out option remains unaddressed publicly. Spotify continues to refine the feature, and the artist’s feedback may influence future iterations.
