CoSA Instrumental Music Conservatory Announces September 28 Recital Featuring Diverse Ensembles
The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) will host its next instrumental music recital on Monday, September 28 at 6 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre on the campus of Coronado High School, located at 650 D Avenue in Coronado, California. The program will showcase a string quintet, a jazz ensemble, a woodwind trio, a saxophone trio, a brand‑new brass quintet, and several solo pianists.
CoSA is San Diego County’s premier public school arts conservatory. It operates as a school‑within‑a‑school on the Coronado High School campus and enrolls about 200 scholar‑artists in grades 9‑12. Students come from Coronado and other parts of the San Diego area and are admitted through a competitive application and audition process. The conservatory is a State of California‑approved Career Technical Education program that offers more than three hours of instruction each school day.
The Instrumental Music Conservatory emphasizes both classical and jazz traditions. Students receive intensive training on their chosen instruments—whether wind, percussion, brass, jazz, or string—alongside coursework in music theory, ear training, jazz theory and improvisation, electronic music skills, composition, and orchestration. The curriculum also includes music history and culture, music technology, and the music business.
"CoSA Instrumental Music students are passionate about their craft," said a CoSA spokesperson. "Many go on to study music in college or continue to perform as adults." The conservatory’s faculty includes industry specialists and educators with advanced degrees, and the program benefits from a strong fundraising auxiliary.
The upcoming recital will feature ensembles that reflect the breadth of the conservatory’s training. The string quintet will perform selections from the classical repertoire, while the jazz ensemble will showcase contemporary improvisational pieces. The woodwind trio and saxophone trio will present works that highlight the technical demands of wind instruments. The new brass quintet will perform pieces that demonstrate the ensemble’s cohesion and the students’ mastery of brass performance. Solo pianists will conclude the program with individual performances that demonstrate their technical and expressive development.

The others include Classical and Contemporary Dance, Digital Arts (Animation, Filmmaking, Graphic Design), Musical Theatre & Drama, Theatre Production, and Design & Management & Visual Art. Each conservatory provides a focused, pre‑professional education that prepares students for higher education and careers in the arts.
The Black Box Theatre, part of the Coronado Performing Arts Center, has a seating capacity of 80 and is frequently used for intimate performances by CoSA students. The venue’s acoustics and stage design provide an ideal setting for the recital’s diverse program.
CoSA’s commitment to rigorous academic standards and intensive arts instruction has earned the program national recognition. The Coronado High School campus, where CoSA is located, is a California Distinguished School and has received Model Continuation High School awards.
The recital is open to the public and will be free of charge. Tickets can be purchased online through the CoSA website or at the school’s front office.
