Incognito is a British acid jazz band renowned for their sophisticated blend of jazz, funk, soul, and R&B, helping to define and popularize the acid jazz movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in London in 1979 by guitarist, songwriter, and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, the group has long been characterized by its evolving lineup of talented vocalists and musicians. Rather than functioning as a traditional fixed band, Incognito operates more like a musical collective, with Bluey serving as its creative anchor and guiding force.

The band first gained attention with their debut album “Jazz Funk” (1981), but it was during the acid jazz resurgence a decade later that Incognito truly found international success. Their 1991 album “Inside Life” introduced a polished, groove-driven sound that balanced jazz musicianship with contemporary soul influences. Tracks like “Always There” became defining songs of the era, showcasing the group’s ability to create infectious rhythms paired with smooth, expressive vocals.

Throughout the 1990s, Incognito released a series of acclaimed albums, including “Tribes, Vibes + Scribes” (1992) and “Positivity” (1993), further establishing their signature sound. Their music is marked by tight horn arrangements, layered instrumentation, and a strong emphasis on groove, often featuring rich harmonies and uplifting lyrical themes. The band’s rotating cast of vocalists contributed to a diverse sonic palette, allowing each project to feel fresh while maintaining a consistent musical identity.

Incognito’s influence extends beyond their own recordings, as they played a key role in bringing jazz-influenced music back into mainstream club culture. Their work helped bridge the gap between traditional jazz and modern dance music, appealing to both musicians and casual listeners. Over time, they continued to incorporate elements of contemporary R&B, house, and neo-soul, ensuring their sound remained current without losing its roots.

Today, Incognito is celebrated as one of the leading acts in acid jazz and a lasting presence in global jazz and soul music. With decades of releases and international touring, they have built a reputation for musical excellence and consistency. Their fusion of technical skill, groove-oriented songwriting, and collaborative spirit has solidified their legacy as innovators who brought jazz back to the dance floor while maintaining artistic depth.
