Jurassic 5 is an American hip-hop group known for their classic, old-school-inspired sound, tight vocal harmonies, and emphasis on lyricism and turntablism. Formed in Los Angeles, California, in the mid-1990s, the group consists of rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir (Soup), and Marc 7, along with DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark.

Jurassic 5 emerged during a time when hip-hop was becoming increasingly commercialized, offering a refreshing return to the genre’s roots. Their music is heavily influenced by the golden age of hip-hop, featuring boom-bap beats, intricate rhyme patterns, and coordinated group delivery reminiscent of earlier rap crews.

They gained early attention with their self-titled debut EP and later achieved wider recognition with albums such as Quality Control, which included the hit single “What’s Golden.” The album helped establish them as a leading act in alternative and underground hip-hop.

A defining feature of Jurassic 5’s sound is their use of group harmonies and call-and-response vocal arrangements, setting them apart from many contemporaries who focused on individual performances. Their DJs also played a central role, incorporating scratching and turntable techniques as key elements of their music.

Throughout their career, the group released several successful albums and built a strong reputation for their energetic and engaging live performances. Their music maintained a consistent focus on positivity, creativity, and respect for hip-hop’s foundational elements.

Today, Jurassic 5 is regarded as one of the most important groups in alternative hip-hop, celebrated for preserving and revitalizing classic hip-hop styles while bringing them to new audiences.
