The Roots are an American hip-hop group widely regarded as one of the most innovative and respected acts in the genre. Formed in Philadelphia in the late 1980s, the band is led by drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and rapper Black Thought. Known for their use of live instrumentation, The Roots helped redefine hip-hop by blending traditional rap with elements of jazz, soul, funk, and R&B.

Unlike many hip-hop artists who rely primarily on sampled beats, The Roots built their sound around a full band setup, incorporating drums, bass, keyboards, and horns into their recordings and performances. This approach gave their music a rich, organic feel and set them apart within the hip-hop landscape.

The group gained critical acclaim with albums such as Things Fall Apart, which featured the Grammy-winning single “You Got Me.” Their work is often praised for its lyrical depth, musical complexity, and ability to address social and cultural themes with intelligence and nuance.

Black Thought’s intricate lyricism and powerful delivery, combined with Questlove’s precise and innovative drumming, form the backbone of the group’s identity. Their collaborations with a wide range of artists across genres have further expanded their influence and reach.

In addition to their recording career, The Roots have become widely known as the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they bring their musical versatility to a broad audience through live performances and creative segments.

Today, The Roots are recognized as pioneers in hip-hop, celebrated for pushing the boundaries of the genre and elevating its musicality. Their commitment to live performance, thoughtful songwriting, and genre fusion has solidified their legacy as one of the most important and influential groups in modern music.
