Royal Blood are an English rock duo known for their powerful, stripped-down sound that fuses hard rock, blues rock, and alternative influences. Formed in Brighton in 2011, the band consists of bassist and vocalist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher. Despite having only two members, Royal Blood are renowned for creating a massive, guitar-like sound using heavily processed bass, giving their music a dense and aggressive sonic presence.

The duo quickly gained attention in the UK rock scene, leading to widespread acclaim even before the release of their debut album. Their self-titled debut, Royal Blood, was a major commercial success, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart. Tracks like “Out of the Black” and “Figure It Out” showcased their raw energy, tight musicianship, and ability to craft memorable, hard-hitting riffs.

Royal Blood’s sound is characterized by its minimal setup and maximal impact, with Mike Kerr’s bass routed through multiple effects to emulate the depth and distortion of electric guitars. Combined with Ben Thatcher’s dynamic and powerful drumming, the band delivers a high-intensity live experience that rivals much larger groups.

Following their debut, the band continued to evolve their sound with albums such as How Did We Get So Dark? and Typhoons, incorporating elements of dance-rock and electronic music while maintaining their core heaviness. This evolution demonstrated their willingness to experiment while staying rooted in their signature style.

Their music often explores themes of ambition, excess, relationships, and self-reflection, delivered with a blend of swagger and introspection. The combination of catchy hooks and heavy instrumentation has made them one of the standout rock acts of their generation.

Today, Royal Blood are recognized as one of the leading forces in modern rock, praised for revitalizing interest in riff-driven music in an era dominated by other genres. Their ability to create a full, commanding sound as a duo has set them apart, securing their place as a distinctive and influential act in contemporary rock music.
