UFO are a British rock band widely regarded as one of the key pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. Formed in London in 1968, the band played an important role in bridging early hard rock with the emerging heavy metal sound of the 1970s.

They initially gained attention with a more space rock–oriented style before evolving into a heavier, guitar-driven sound. Their classic lineup featured vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, and guitarist Michael Schenker, whose melodic and technically precise playing became a defining element of the band’s sound.

UFO achieved their greatest success in the mid-to-late 1970s with albums such as Phenomenon and Lights Out. These releases included classic tracks like “Doctor Doctor” and “Lights Out,” which became staples of hard rock.

Their music is characterized by powerful riffs, melodic guitar solos, and a balance between hard rock energy and accessible songwriting. UFO’s approach helped influence later generations of metal and rock bands.

The band’s live album Strangers in the Night is often cited as one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded, capturing their energy and musicianship at their peak.

Despite lineup changes and periods of hiatus, UFO maintained a long career and continued to release music and tour for decades.

Today, UFO are recognized as a foundational band in the development of hard rock and heavy metal. Their influence can be heard in countless artists, and their legacy remains significant within the history of rock music.
