Witchfinder General is an English heavy metal band known for their role in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. Formed in the late 1970s in Stourbridge, England, the band developed a sound rooted in heavy, doom-laden riffs combined with traditional metal structures. Their music is characterized by dark themes, blues-influenced guitar work, and a raw, early heavy metal aesthetic.

The band’s classic lineup included vocalist Zeeb Parkes and guitarist Phil Cope, whose songwriting helped define their identity. Their style drew comparisons to early Black Sabbath, particularly in their use of heavy, slow riffs and occult-inspired imagery, though Witchfinder General often incorporated a more aggressive edge.

Witchfinder General gained recognition with albums such as “Death Penalty” (1982) and “Friends of Hell” (1983), which have since become cult classics among fans of heavy metal and doom. Their music stood out for its combination of gritty production, provocative imagery, and straightforward yet powerful songwriting.

Despite a relatively short initial run, the band developed a lasting reputation within underground metal circles. Their work influenced later doom metal and traditional heavy metal acts, contributing to the evolution of heavier, darker styles of music.

Today, Witchfinder General is regarded as an important cult band within the NWOBHM movement. Their legacy is defined by their raw sound, dark themes, and influence on the development of doom and heavy metal genres.
