Asia Announces New Album Indigo and Releases First Single "The Traveller (Into The Light)", Set for November 6, 2026
The new material marks the first outing for Asia’s current quartet, which brings together founding keyboardist Geoff Downes, guitarist John Mitchell (formerly of It Bites, Lonely Robot, and Kino), drummer Virgil Donati (Planet X), and bassist‑vocalist Harry Whitley. Downes, a constant presence since 1990, described the single as “a high‑power energy piece, with a few elements of prog trickery but retaining the accessible chorus block, which was always a signature of Asia’s music from the very beginning.” He added that the song “is a song of great optimism, mainly about looking forward to the future and travelling ‘into the light’.” The track, the opening song on Indigo, is defined by Donati’s dynamic drumming and Mitchell’s soaring guitar work, while Whitley’s vocals are noted as “commanding” and Downes’ keyboards “hold the wall of sound together.”
Recorded throughout 2025, Indigo was produced by Downes and the band, with Mitchell handling mixing and mastering. The 15‑track listing opens with the title track, then moves through a trio of “Tattoo Indigo” pieces (Parts 1–3) co‑written with the late John Wetton, and concludes with “Chesapeake Bay,” a collaboration that features guest spots from former Yes guitarist Steve Howe and former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.
The album’s genesis began in 2015, after Asia released Gravitas in 2014. Downes and Wetton had started working on new material, but Wetton’s illness and subsequent death in 2017 halted progress. “So, it was always in my mind that at some point it would be a shame not to finish off some of these songs and finally release them as part of an Asia album,” Downes said. The release follows a series of lineup changes that have shifted Asia from its original 1981 formation—Wetton, Howe, Downes, and Carl Palmer—to the current quartet, which was announced in 2024 when Downes recruited Mitchell, Donati, and Whitley.
Frontiers Records, an Italian label known for its roster of classic rock and progressive acts, will distribute Indigo in all major formats. The label’s statement notes that the album “bridges Asia’s legacy with contemporary influences, aiming to put Asia back on the map.” With Indigo, Asia returns to the studio after a long hiatus, offering a collection that blends the band’s melodic progressive roots with modern production and high‑profile guest contributions. While no supporting tour has been announced, the album’s launch on November 6, 2026, will likely spark renewed interest in Asia’s extensive catalogue among long‑time listeners and new fans alike.
The project underscores the enduring appeal of Asia’s blend of soaring melodies and technical prowess, and it positions the band for a fresh chapter in the evolving progressive‑rock landscape.
