Deftones is an American alternative metal band known for their atmospheric sound, emotional depth, and ability to blend heavy music with ambient and experimental elements. Formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988, the band became one of the most distinctive acts to emerge from the alternative metal and nu metal scenes, often standing apart from their peers due to their artistic approach and sonic versatility.

The band gained widespread recognition with their album “Around the Fur” (1997), but achieved major critical and commercial success with “White Pony” (2000). That album marked a turning point in their sound, incorporating electronic textures, dreamlike atmospheres, and more nuanced songwriting. Songs like “Change (In the House of Flies)” and “Digital Bath” showcased their ability to balance heaviness with mood and melody.

Led by vocalist Chino Moreno, Deftones are known for their dynamic contrast between aggressive instrumentation and ethereal vocals. Their music often shifts between intense, distorted guitar-driven sections and softer, ambient passages, creating a sense of tension and release. This blend of styles has drawn influences from metal, shoegaze, post-rock, and electronic music.

Throughout their career, Deftones have continued to evolve, releasing albums such as “Diamond Eyes” (2010) and “Koi No Yokan” (2012), which further refined their atmospheric and melodic direction. Their willingness to experiment while maintaining a consistent identity has earned them critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase.

Today, Deftones are regarded as one of the most influential bands in alternative metal. Their ability to merge intensity with atmosphere has set them apart within the genre, influencing a wide range of artists and helping redefine what heavy music can sound like.
